what can set off metal detectors in stores besides stolen items?
it seems lately that when ever i walk through a metal detector in stores it always goes off. Obviously i don't steal items from stores so i am curious if it could be an article of clothing, jewlery, keys etc etc if any one knows feel free to answer
The detectors in stores are activated by special tags that are inside items. These tags respond to a radio signal that is generated by the sensor. When the item is placed on the part of the checkout that buzzes, there is a capacitor in the tag that gets magnetized (or demagnetized) , and the spacing of the metal changes, cancelling the effect of the capacitor.
If the detector is going off, then it means that you have some item with you that is responding to the RF field setup by the detector. It 's possible that some electronic item is responding, or perhaps you have one of these tags that wasn't properly magnetized. Some stores will let you through if the sensor alerts as long as you have a receipt. If they do this, and you carry the tag, it will go off when you go through.
A friend of mine had one such, and he used to put it in his shoe, and, wearing a tank-top, shorts and sneakers, have fun setting off the sensors.

why dont the metal detector things in stores go off all the time?
i was just at a store buying a dress and the lady forgot to take off the security device but the store detector thing didn't go off. i mean i paid for it but shouldn't the thing have gone off or something? just wondering why it didn't work...
Actually they only work about 80%-85% of the time, but it can depend on how good the system is, some are worse than others. Those % BTW are straight out of my ex-bosses mouth. Once I bought a skate board and walked out of the store, realized the security thing was still there and walked back in to have them take it off with out the alarm going off.
