Aluminum to replace copper as a conductor in on-board power systems
Electric power and electronics are playing an ever-increasing role in all kinds of vehicles. Currently copper is the conductive material of choice. But in comparison to aluminum copper is heavy and expensive. In particular for fully electric vehicles the switch to the cheaper and lighter aluminum would be an interesting option. That is why the optimization of intricate power supply networks is …

Power Metal

Reminds me of my favourite old joke about the different kinds of metal:

Scenario:
The princess is stuck in a big castle guarded by a dragon!

POWER METAL:
The protagonist arrives riding a white unicorn, escapes from the dragon, saves the princess and makes love to her in an enchanted forest.

TRASH METAL:
The protagonist arrives, fights the dragon, saves the princess and fucks her.

HEAVY METAL:
The protagonist arrives on a Harley, kills the dragon, drinks a few beers and fucks the princess.

FOLK METAL:
The protagonist arrives with some friends playing accordions, violins, flutes and many more weird instruments, the dragon falls asleep (because of all the dancing). They all leave … without the princess.

VIKING METAL:
The protagonist arrives in a ship, kills the dragon with his mighty axe, skins the dragon and eats it, rapes the princess, steals her belongings and burns the castle before leaving. Aaaaarrrrrrgggggghhhhh!

DEATH METAL:
The protagonist arrives, kills the dragon, fucks the princess and kills her, then leaves.

BLACK METAL:
The protagonist arrives at midnight, kills the dragon and impales it in front of the castle. Then he sodomises the princess, drinks her blood in a ritual before killing her. Then he impales the princess next to the dragon.

GORE METAL:
The protagonist arrives, kills the dragon and spreads his guts in front of the castle, fucks the princess and kills her. Then he fucks the dead body again, slashes her belly and eats her guts. Then he fucks the carcass for the third time, burns the corpse and fucks it for the last time.

MetalDetectors.com

DOOM METAL:
The protagonist arrives, sees the size of the dragon and thinks he could never beat him, then he gets depressed and commits suicide. The dragon eats his body and the princess as dessert. That’s the end of the sad story.

PROGRESSIVE METAL:
The protagonist arrives with a guitar and plays a solo of 26 minutes. The dragon kills himself out of boredom. The protagonist arrives to the princess’ bedroom, plays another solo with all the techniques and tunes he learned in the last year of the conservatory. The princess escapes looking for the ”HEAVY METAL” protagonist.

GLAM METAL:
The protagonist arrives, the dragon laughs at the guy’s appearance and lets him enter. He steals the princess’ make-up and tries to paint the castle in a beautiful pink color.

NU METAL:
The protagonist arrives in a run-down Honda Civic and attempts to fight the dragon but he burns to death when his moronic baggy clothes catch fire.

LOVE METAL:
The tiny, beautiful protagonist arrives and is raped by the princess right away. The dragon feels sympathy, eats the princess and rapes the protagonist … then eats him, then a bunch of screaming other princesses arrive and kill the dragon because of their pain at losing the protagonist.

METALCORE
The protagonist swings his feet and arms about wildly, accidentally knocking the dragon out. Then he storms off in anger because someone messed up his dance routine.

EMO-METAL:
A person of questionable gender arrives, the dragon kills himself listening to the ensuing moaning about how life sucks and no one loves him. The protagonist then attempts to top himself while posting about it on MySpace.

Power Metal

Image by Rev. Xanatos Satanicos Bombasticos (ClintJCL)
This guy had the exact same issue of Power Metal (1989, featuring Sabbat, King Diamond, Celtic Frost, Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth, Metallica, and others) that I had in high school. I had cut the pics out and put them on my wall; he had saved them over the years and gotten them autographed. But *I* had a vinyl copy of Dreamweaver and an original pressing of the CD (extremely rare) FTW!

BACKSTORY: After 18 years of intense worship of the Sabbat album "Dreamweaver (Reflections Of Our Yesterdays)", we finally get to see them in concert!! Carolyn & I are both BIG, BIG fans. And meet them, and everything. FULL WRITEUP OF THE CONCERT HERE. It was awesome!! And of course, click "Dreamweaver" to read my *5800 word* review and analysis of the album as it relates to the book it was based on.

A great light to read by. The only noticeable point of concern is the lack of consistency in the color temperature of the LEDs. Some are of a “hotter” color temperature than others, but this difference is only noticed when looking directly at the LEDs themselves. There is no discernible mottling of color in the light shown onto surfaces – the light pattern is fairly even despite the LED temperature variation. The light produced is still “warm” and desirable over the cool white LEDs.

This is about the best LED lamp, possibly the best overall lamp. Compact, flexible, easy to use, different light intensities and does not generate heat. Low electric consumption, easy to put together and a great modern design.

After living with and replacing high temperature halogen lamps for 10 years I thought I’d try a different lighting technology. I chose the daylight bulbs that provide the highest wattage equivalent. It took a couple of weeks to get used to the spectrum of light, and it certainly didn’t come close to lighting up the room as a halogen lamp would. However, I really love it, the dimmer function, the functionality of the light bar is quite nice with a 360 degree spin capability.

The Koncept LED floor model is quite spare in its design. It was simple to put together. It came packaged in an engineered box insert that would be handy for a return. I won’t be returning mine and would love to buy more LED technology lighting products as they improve and come down in price. The desk Z-Bar lamp may be my next Koncept purchase.

I would highly recommend this lamp.

nice lamp, but think about the details, October 16, 2008

I use this lamp every day for reading, and I love it. I don’t mind the daylight spectrum color, and the design allows you to put the light just where you need it. The fits and finishes are very high quality. It’s amazing to think that such a great reading light consumes only 10 watts.

But be careful about the 10-watt power consumption. That’s what it consumes when it’s on, but, since it uses a low-voltage transformer, it consumes some power even when it’s off–unless you have it on a switched outlet. That’s what I do, so I am satisfied. But if you just plug the transformer-plug into an always-live outlet, you (and the planet) may be worse off than if you’d used a CF in a regular lamp.

This review is from: I-Tower High Power LED Floor Lamp- Metal Black/Cool

This is one of fairly few “native” LED lamps available today, and for that it gets a gold star.

Pros: The lamp itself is very good looking, highly adjustable, and puts out a good bit of light for a floor/reading lamp. Very little power consumption. Dimmable.
Cons: The cool hue is not for everyone. The joint between the lamp and the base feels a little weak.

This review is from: 400 Watt 400w Digital Switchable Ballast Grow Light Set Includes HPS, MH Bulbs, Reflector, Power Cord and Hanger, GYO-2002

The product itself seems to be working extremely well, ridiculously bright
I started to use a computer fan on the capacitor since it seemed to run fairly hot and the fan keeps it at a cool comfortable temp.

SO, i started using the light right out of the box and had no problems. Then, after a bit i started to smell burning plastic but was unable to determine where it was coming from. After doing some searching online for similar accounts i found the problem… The reflector that comes in the package has a thin blue plastic sheet that is supposed to be removed before use (was to protect it during shipping). However, nowhere in the box was any notice of such a thing or as i can recall any instructions whatsoever. So essentially the smell was indeed from burning plastic and unfortunately some was melted solid to the reflector and won’t come off.
But already the smell is much much less and I have less to worry about the fire hazard that was present.

    Overall
Great product, does exactly what it is supposed to and my plants are growing fantastically
Capacitor runs hot so adding a small quiet fan is nice to cool its heatsink
REMOVE THE PLASTIC COVER on the reflector, less you want to do some serious damage via fire or destroyed bulb.

This package is a great value. Everything works as it should. The hood is a bit cheap and gets very hot, but for this price…very much worth the trade-off. Make sure that you peal the blue plastic off from under the hood.

This review is from: Jack Lalanne’s JLSS Power Juicer Deluxe Stainless-Steel Electric Juicer (Kitchen)

First off, let me admit to the fact that I’ve never owned any kind of juicer before, this one is the first.

We were given the Jack LaLanne Stainless Juicer as a gift from someone who already had one and loved it. I had modestly high hopes for it, not being a big powered-kitchen-gadget fan; but we also have been trying to improve our diets due and lose some weight, so the gift was rather timely to meet that end. I honestly knew nothing about this product until I pulled it out of the box at home. We’d gone to the local big-box store and bought a bunch of stuff to put in the machine and try it out: Kiwis, mangoes, carrots, tomatoes, apples, oranges, pears, ginger root, celery and pineapple.

    The Good:

Out of the box I got the impression that this was a sturdy product. All of the parts are fairly simple, that means less stuff to break or clean to me. It assembled in a snap, I didn’t even look at the directions (typical guy…I know). Upon firing up the machine, I was impressed with how quiet it was. A modest hum and vibration was all that I could hear. Fruit being put in the device emits a sound reminiscent of a very quiet band or table saw. By the time I’ve written this, all of the above products have passed through the juicer and released some juice without trouble, the “hard” bits were cut off or out (stems, mango pits, etc…) and the juicer had no difficulty turning any of them into pulp. Incidentally, one of my favorite things to put in the juicer so far is simply a couple of carrots and apples. Tastes good, but probably gives me an orange tongue… There is also a stopper on the drain spout that allows you to stop the flow of juice while you trade out whatever it is you are using to catch the juice.

Cleanup was no problem. Dumped the pulp bucket, cleaned the gunk out of the lid (some pulp sticks to the upper lid) with my hand and rinsed it off with soapy water. The blade was easy to clean, but the screen takes a little more effort, it is fairly delicate. I was able to clean it no problem with a lightweight scrubbing pad. The lower portion and base clean up easily as well.

What produce seems to do well:

Apples do very well. Lots of juice and the pulp is pretty dry.

    Carrots: Same as apples.

Celery: Pretty good job here too. Careful though, celery has a pretty strong taste; it’ll overpower a lot of other flavors.

Oranges: Pretty good. I’ve noticed that it doesn’t seem to get as much juice out of these as it could, the pulp can be pretty wet sometimes.

Kiwis: Not so good. The kiwis are very pulpy and tend to block the undersized drain hole from the catch basin. They taste good though…

Pineapple: Lots of juice, not as much as you might think though. Due to the very fibrous nature of pineapple I found I had to stop the juicer after half a pineapple and clean the screen. The fibers were getting caught in it, unbalancing and blocking it. It tends to gum up the cutting blade as well.

Mango: Same as kiwis. Tastes good, but the pulp gums up the works.

Tomatoes: Great! Lots of juice, and with the re-addition of some of the pulp makes a great tomato soup. Again, due to the soft pulpy nature of tomatoes, it tends to plug things up.

Pears: If you pick the firmer varieties, they go through just like apples.

Ginger root: We’d had a glass of ginger/orange juice somewhere and wanted to re-create it, it was pretty good. Ginger doesn’t have a high water content so you need to run it through first and then the wetter produce behind it to pull the ginger flavor out with it. Pretty strong flavor, don’t need as much as you think.

    The Bad and Ugly:

There are several design issues that this juicer has that are serious drawbacks to me. The drain hole is one of the big ones, as well as the fit and finish of some of the parts.

The drain hole simply isn’t large enough. It plugs up way too easily no matter what produce is run through the machine in any sufficient amount to create more than two or three tall glasses of juice. This results in juice leaking down the motorized base and making a pretty substantial mess, usually because you are halfway through running something through the machine and the juice has been backing up for a bit. I think it said somewhere in the directions that some of this is “normal”, I gotta raise the BS flag…I call it bad design. The directions say not to run really ripe fruit through the machine (which could lead to leakage problems); well, what are you supposed to use, hard and sour unripe fruit? Even chasing something “pulpy” like kiwi through the machine with something hard like apple doesn’t seem to clear the machine out at all. The inability to use ripe fruit seems to contradict the reason you’d want the…

    Don’t buy this–very bad machine, April 4, 2008
This review is from: Jack Lalanne’s JLSS Power Juicer Deluxe Stainless-Steel Electric Juicer (Kitchen)

When I heard that Jack’s machine would take whole apples, I seemed to have lost all sense and ordered his juicer, which I believed would be an upgrade from my Mr. Juiceman. It’s time consuming to cut products to fit the juicer. What Jack fails to mention in his ads–his chute does take apples, but only small ones, the ones you usually don’t buy. Thus, I’m still cutting products, same as usual.

I juice all kinds of fruits and veggies and have over many years. If you are new to the experience of juicing, you will quickly learn that better made, more professional models are $400-500. Thus, you must choose these lower cost models, that despite their glitz are largely made of plastic. The only thing going for this Jack LaLanne model is that they used good sense in making the plastic black. Despite every good cleaning, white plastic models take on fruit/veggie stains that over time are very difficult to remove.

This machine constantly chokes, too-often fails to juice despite pressure placed on the chute, or it stops entirely with constipation. If I’m not wrestling with a stuck chute, I must stop the machine in the middle of juicing, dislodge the partially juiced products, dealing with mess. It’s not a fun experience.

I cannot say I had a better experience with the Juiceman model except to say that it was far more reliable than this one and less messy.

May I suggest for anyone who intends to buy a juicer to do their homework? Check for the speed of juicing–which affects the quality of juice. Check the size of the chute and how the juicer handles root veggies (hard veggies like carrots and beets), soft and thick leafies. If poorly constructed, you will not get the best benefits of the juice and much product may be going to the garbage instead as juice to your mouth.

Each time I use this Jack LaLanne model, I have to laborously wrap leafies around carrots or apples or be sure that I clear the machine with a juicy veggie (like a cucumber), before plotting to juice the next item.

There’s too much involved using this machine. It’s a mess. Don’t buy it.

This review is from: Jack Lalanne’s JLSS Power Juicer Deluxe Stainless-Steel Electric Juicer (Kitchen)

Is it hard to eat your vegetables and have enough fruit servings in a day? It was for me; so I decided to buy another juicer. My last juicer had a very small spout and you had to cut up everything before you put it into the juicer; and it was extremely noisy. I got rid of it because it did not measure up.

I purchased the Jack LaLanne Power Juicer and have been very pleased with it. I read the other reviews and I will try to respond to them as well based upon my own experiences. First, for me the juicer is excellent. I juice fruits and most vegetables. You have to insert soft vegetables followed by hard vegetables for it to work optimally. I have had no problems following the directions which indicate that this works best.

I have made some wonderful drinks with the Power Juicer. Here is one called the Energy Boost Drink which I love:

    1 Carrot
    1 Celery Stalk
    1 Beet Root
    Parsley
    Lettuce
    Watercress
    Spinach
    3 Tomatoes
    Salt To Taste

It is terrific and the machine does an exceptional job with very little pulp at all.

I don’t think the machine does as well with grasses. Especially if you are not following them up with a hard vegetable or fruit upon insertion.

However, the following fruits and vegetables have worked well for me (I have used all of these in juices so far):

    FRUITS:
Pineapple, Apples, Guava, Papaya, Oranges, tomatoes, watermelon, cantaloupes, honeydew, limes, lemons, strawberries, grapes and blueberries only if followed by a hard fruit, grapefruit, mangoes, raspberries only if followed by a hard fruit, kiwi, peaches (pitted), pears

    VEGETABLES AND HERBS:

Carrots, Celery, Beet Root, Parsley, Lettuce, Watercress, Spinach, Tomatoes, Cucumber, Zucchini, Yellow Squash, Peppers, Ginger Root, Kale, Fennel Bulb, Horseradish Root, Garlic, Onion, Cilantro, Cauliflower, Broccoli, Lemongrass

I have the Power Juicer Deluxe (I BOUGHT IT IN A STORE – CALLED DELUXE) and I have now learned that there is a Power Juicer Elite which does even a better job with soft fruits, nuts and soy. In the Elite Model, you can make your own soy milk, almond milk while extracting the juice from the nuts, themselves. You can even put plums, peaches and cherries in whole. For the reviewer who is interested in a more advanced technology to handle the grasses and the soft fruits better, I would recommend spending the extra money and getting the Power Juicer Elite model.

Just be careful to check out which model you are actually getting because there are “slight” differences between them. I did find with the Deluxe model that the lemongrass and the berries if not followed by a hard fruit or vegetable did not work as well. However, the Power Juicer Elite should work well for those looking for soy technology (rice milk, coconut milk, almond milk, soy milk).

ABOUT THE DISHWASHER: I have found the dishwasher to be perfectly safe for all of the components, but I only put them on the top shelf. I would not trust them close to the heating element of the dishwasher. I honestly have put all components in the dishwasher with no problem (only top shelf). In fact, many times I clean the juicer components easily with the sprayer in less than 5 minutes; and it does not seem that difficult for me; although I use it every day and maybe I have gotten use to it.

An excellent value in an electric blow and vac, May 6, 2007
    By
BBS, Bay Area, CA “BBS” (Bay Area, CA USA) –
This review is from: Toro 51599 Ultra 12 amp Variable-Speed Electric Blower/Vacuum with Metal Impeller (Lawn & Patio)

I bought this Toro electric blow and vac in utter frustration after spending a small fortune on similar gasoline powered products. I use it as a vac several times per week and even daily in the Fall. I found that the very cheap gasoline blow and vacs start falling apart very quickly indeed as the result of poor and shoddy design so I moved up to the top of the line, Echo, which appears to be very well made and engineered. My first one, an ES211, did outlast its 2 year warranty, it had a starter assembly and cord replaced under warranty but then just wore out during the third year. The second ES211 lasted 18 months until something broke inside the engine and it wouldn’t even rotate. The third one (a $290+tax ES231 heavy duty model) is just over a year old and overheats very quickly, smokes badly, and is melting the plastic grill surrounding the engine.
The dealers lie and tell me that it’s my fault and that the problem is lack of lubrication. As a lifelong, now retired, professional mechanical engineer and having owned 2-stroke engines since a teenager I have always used the correct gas/oil mixture in 2-stroke engines including motorcycles of course.
The Toro Ultra Blower and Vac does everything I need. Let’s list the advantages. It is amazingly light and doesn’t strain your back lugging its bulk plus a heavy bag of leaves around the way a gas powered model does – this is very important and not to be dismissed as you get up in years. It always starts when you turn the knob – you sure can’t say that about gasoline powered garden equipment. It converts from a blower to a vac very quickly without needing a screwdriver and undue force – Toro obviously corrected this problem from the prior model. It is very quiet compared with gas models – your neighbors will appreciate this. It doesn’t have a spark plug or an air filter that needs frequent attention. It doesn’t get dirty, grimy, and oily from gasoline exhaust and leaky carburetors and tubing. You don’t have to buy expensive gasoline and oil and be required to mix and find a place to store a separate highly inflammable gas/oil mixture. The Toro has a cast magnesium impeller that handles the occasional twig or stone quite handily. The leaf bag is well designed, it disconnects easily and is a snap to empty. The vac suction and air blast from the blower seems equivalent to the Echo. Last but not least is P R I C E , my Toro was $69.99, at that price I could buy four of them for the price of one Echo ES231.
Now for the only disadvantage I can think of. I use a 100 ft. 13amp. electric cord and reel. You sacrifice some ease of mobility because you have a cord dragging behind you all of the time – nothing in life is perfect I guess.

    Excellent!-Better than I expected!, July 14, 2007

This review is from: Toro 51599 Ultra 12 amp Variable-Speed Electric Blower/Vacuum with Metal Impeller (Lawn & Patio)

I was originally planning to buy a GAS powered leaf blower.
However, the glowing reviews that I read on this leaf blower (here and on other sites) made me reconsider-I’m glad I did!
This unit is very light, well balanced, extremely powerful and QUIET!
NOTE: This model has the METAL blower blades as opposed to plastic in many of the lower model # Toro leaf blowers (some people have reported breakage of the blades on those models due to small rocks and twigs cracking or breaking the blades). Spend the extra few dollars to get this model that has the METAL blades.
Yes, you will need to deal with the hassle of an extension cord when using this tool, however I feel that it is LESS of a hassle in the long run (no fuel, no maintenance, no excessive noise or fumes, less expensive, leaf vacuum capability). Much less of an inconvenience than I expected.
This Leaf blower is so powerful that all of my walkways, patios, and driveway are free of lawn clippings and leaves in less than 5 minutes time and I rarely need to go above half throttle.

Oh yeah, the photo on this page is WRONG. You will actually get the RED colored unit (2nd revision maybe?) and it does indeed come with the leaf bag and vacuum tubing.
IMHO this is a very well designed and engineered product – I was skeptical before I bought it, but I am very glad that I did.
