leopard shark – Triakis semifasciata
Ground Shark

The leopard shark, Triakis semifasciata, is a hound shark found in the coastal waters of the eastern Pacific Ocean, along the coast of North America from Oregon to Baja California.

The species can grow up to 7 ft (2.12 m) in length, with a long, slender body and head. The distinctive markings that give the species its common name provide camouflage against dappled ground. Leopard sharks are bottom feeders, eating worms, mollusks, crustaceans, octopuses, and small fish.

Leopard sharks migrate seasonally. Their reproduction is aplacental viviparity (no yolk-sack placenta); the 4 to 29 pups per litter gestate within the body of the female and are born live. Gestation is estimated at 10 to 12 months.

The sharks hunt in groups, sometimes with smooth-hound sharks. The species is actively sought by sport fishermen in the San Francisco Bay Area and in Monterey Bay for its tender, flavorful flesh. Conservationists are concerned with sport fishing of the species, which, like most sharks, reproduces slowly.

This review is from: Pentair GW9500 Kreepy Krauly Great White Automatic Pool Cleaner for In-Ground Pools, Grey/Black (Lawn & Patio)

I bought this after my Hayward Navigator died, mainly because it cost half as much and it was the least expensive in-ground cleaner that people seem to be happy with from what I can see on the Internet. After using it I found that it is really a great cleaner. It seems to be especially resistant to jamming compared to the Navigator, which would get small pebbles or twigs caught in it’s turbine.

It comes with some nice translucent hose sections which seem more flexible than what I get a the pool store. It also has an adapter for a dedicated cleaner port (if you have one) a telepole attachment so that it can be used manually and a flow gauge.

It does clean the shallow end of my pool and seems especially good at scrubbing the walls. It does occasionally get stuck on the pool light (of all places)

The manual does not say that it is not designed to clean the shallow end. It does say that it will spend most of it’s time is the deep end, but that is normal for non-robotic cleaners.

I wouldn’t trade it for a new Navigator even though they cost twice as much.

I would have wanted to read that this model is not designed to clean the shallow end well. Really??- “not designed”. I had to pull up troubleshooting in the instructions to learn this important fact. After 2 8hr cycles, it was clear this was not doing a good job in the shallow end. Easy to install and fine tune. I like that it has coarse bristles to brush away algae. And it did a good job in the deep end.

This review is from: Kreepy Krauly ‘Lil Shark Above Ground Pool Cleaner

We got our Lil Shark when we bought our 15 foot pool. The one on display scurried around the sample pool like a bat out of hell. Ours goes around in small circles. The places it goes over get clean, but it likes the area under the skimmer. No matter where I place it, the Lil Shark rushes back to that spot. I have resorted to using a rope to tie it in the area that needs cleaning. It also doesn’t like doing the perimeter of the pool, and constantly gets stuck under the ladder. After running it for hours, I generally have to get a pole and manually go over the areas it missed.

This review is from: Kreepy Krauly ‘Lil Shark Above Ground Pool Cleaner

In the past I had always had an in-ground pool and used a Polaris. When I met my wife, she had an “above” ground pool.

We live in the South and it was a constant chore and time consuming to clean our pool every day. I had suggested a pool cleaner for over a year. She was never convinced. This year I researched and read article after article and was convinced that a “Kreepy Krauly Lil’Shark was the answer to my prayers! I found it at Amazon and it was nearly $49.00 cheaper than other products and there was no shipping charges. That sealed the deal.

It took minutes to assemble, minutes to attach it into the skimmer basket and I run it for 2-4 hours a day for a sparkling pool.

Give yourself a break and ENJOY your pool and ALL the free time you will have if you purchase the Lil’ Shark.

‘Lil Shark doesn’t have much bite, July 6, 2010

This review is from: Kreepy Krauly ‘Lil Shark Above Ground Pool Cleaner

The Kreepy Krauly ‘Lil Shark is well made and easy to assemble and operate. It cleans the pool so so in the spots it goes over but, it misses a lot of places. We have an 18 ft above ground pool and it cannot cover the entire area in 4 hours time. The problem we have encountered is that it will stop moving, clean the same places over and over or, will get hung up on the ladder or just the pool wall. You have to periodically check on it and free it up or reposition it to get it going again. It doesn’t handle large leaves or stuck on dirt very well either. We have had ours for about a month and I probably wouldn’t purchase it again knowing how it performs. I wanted something to free up my time spent vacuuming the pool but, I still have to babysit the ‘Lil Shark, (sigh).
