Eureka Tower Facts: How, Why, and What!
Article by Dominique Vangheel
You may think that the Eureka Tower is just another skycraper. But I’m sure these pretty interesting Eureka Tower facts will fuel your interest.
With its big golden square and sleek design, the Eureka Tower stands high atop the city of Melbourne. It is in fact the tallest tower in Melbourne. The construction of the building began in August 2002, and just after 4 years, the outside of the building was completed by June 2006. Thanks to the speedy construction, the tower opened its doors to Melbourne in October 2006.
Eureka Tower facts: How tall is It?
The opening of this skyscraper was a big day for Melbourne. Many were surprised at how quickly it was completed and thousands of spectators were excited to take a glimpse inside the tower. Designed by Nonda Katsalidis, the Eureka Tower is one of the tallest towers in the world. Composed of 92 storeys including the basement, this skyscraper is built upon over 200 pylons plugged thirty-three metres deep into ground in order to support its structure.
The Eureka Tower is only one of seven buildings in the world to have more than 90 storeys. Known as the 43rd tallest building in the world, it is the tallest standing building in Melbourne and the second tallest standing building in Australia – second only to Q1 in Gold Coast.
Eureka Tower facts: Why the Name?
You may be wondering where this enormous building got its name, so I might as well dig it up and tell you. It pays homage to the Victorian Gold Rush in 1854, also known as the Eureka Stockade or Eureka Rebellion. The blue and white refer to the Eureka Stockade flag. The gold symbolizes the gold rush, and the unique red stripe symbolizes the bloodshed during the memorable revolt.
Eureka Tower facts: What is Inside?
The building is mostly filled with residential apartments, and they do not come cheap. At the 88th floor of the Eureka Tower is the skydeck. Built with glass floors to give you that surreal experience, you can get a spectacular view of the city. My daughter and I have done it. It was a little bit scary, but also fun. The thought of standing on glass 300 metres above the ground and see what’s underneath you is pretty nerve-wracking. Even without that “special ride”, you can still enjoy a spectacular view of Melbourne without going to the skydeck.

You wouldn’t want to miss the Eureka tower when you are in Melbourne. It’s a fun thing to do that will keep you and your kids entertained for a good little while. Enjoy the view!
