Before the invention of the EMI scanner it was impossible to produce detailed pictures of patients’ brains. With this machine, doctors were first able to show the medical usefulness of scanning. It was the first type of scanner to be adopted in substantial numbers for medicine and set the pattern for other scanning technologies.

X-rays normally produce much better images of dense bodily structures, such as bones, than of brains or other soft tissues. To produce images of the separate parts of the brain it was necessary to introduce air or special liquids to the area. These were hazardous techniques. In addition, X-ray pictures are often confusing, since they are made up from overlapping shadows from different layers and structures in the body.

The brain scanner overcame this by using computing power to construct a picture from a series of 28,800 measurements made by a paired X-ray source and detector rotating around the patient. It took this first scanner several hours to produce its images.

The EMI scanner (computerised tomography – or CT scanner) was invented by Godfrey Hounsfield, who had previously been responsible for the first transistorised British business computer. Hounsfield worked for EMI, the British electronics and music company, which invested in new products after the success of Beatles’ records, which were released on its Parlophone label. The greater experience of overseas companies in the medical technology business, however, forced EMI out of the market within a decade.

Scanner Resistant Clothes Attract Pat-Downs

Article by www.cheapfares.com

Wednesday, January 26th, 2011

Experienced travelers well versed in how to find cheap airplane tickets and discount travel packages should think twice before purchasing clothing that will keep parts of their bodies from showing up clearly on full body scanner images viewed by airport security personnel.

Concerns about privacy are tempting some travelers to purchase security resistant clothing. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has responded that travelers wearing security resistant garments are virtually guaranteed pat-downs.

Marc Carey has come out with a line of “privacy underwear.” He offers T-shirts, panties, and boxer briefs that have strategically located logos with special ink that he claims blurs private parts seen by TSA agents.

MetalDetectors.com

Marc insists that his clothes are not protest garments, rather a “reasonable compromise for travelers to allow the TSA to do their job, but allow people to travel without a great deal of inconvenience and preserve their dignity.”

“Flying Pasties” is another product line that offers reusable vanity inserts that obscure travelers’ private areas when they pass through airport scanners.

The TSA warns that wearing any clothing which blurs what screeners are able to see will likely result in more scrutiny at the airport. The agency says “If there is something shielding an area and we don’t know what’s under it, we have to conduct a pat-down.”

Currently there are 486 full body scanners deployed at 78 U.S. airports. Although some travelers have expressed concern over the graphic images they produce, a recent traveler survey found that having to take off shoes prior to going through a metal detector ranks as a greater nuisance than either pat-down body searches or full body X-ray scanning.

American Airline’s End Game

Many frequent travelers are nervously waiting on the sidelines to see the lasting impact on cheap fares, whether cheap airplane tickets, discount hotel rooms, or cheap vacation packages of American Airlines fight with online travel companies.

American Airlines pulled its fares from Orbitz just before Christmas. Expedia responded by dropping American’s flights. Sabre, the world’s largest reservation system operator, announced plans to downgrade and ultimately eliminate American flights.

Experts expect the conflicting parties to ultimately reach a compromise which will likely be a reduction in the fees the airlines pay Sabre and other global distribution systems (GDS) to disseminate their fares and schedules to online travel companies as well as traditional travel agents.

American and other airlines want to control what fares get displayed where, with the ultimate goal being to drive more sales through their own websites. An ancillary benefit of customers buying airline tickets through airline websites is that the airlines earn revenues when customers decide to add a hotel or car reservation after booking their airfare.

If the airlines have their way, their GDS fees will be reduced, customers will find it more difficult to compare fares, and airlines will be able to increase ancillary revenue.

Fundamentally airlines want to change fliers’ perception that seats are interchangeable commodities sold strictly based on price to where airlines cater to individual travelers based on their personal preferences. Airlines want to create a merchant driven market that they control where information is king and the more a provider knows about who is purchasing its products the greater the sales.

Airlines are not positioned to leave GDSs behind since well over 50 percent of all airline sales come via intermediaries, many of which are either GDS subsidiaries or relay on GDS technology. Neither American nor Delta, which recently pull its fares from three smaller online travel companies, has the technology today to successfully sell 100 percent of their seats on their own.

Online travel companies have proven to be nimble, innovative travel sellers offering package deals and flexible date options. GDSs are working feverishly on developing ways of selling airlines ever expanding list of ancillary services.

Online travel companies will continue to play an important role in the future since too many travelers highly value comparison shopping between several airlines which is something no airline website will ever offer. Price remains the prime reason the majority of travelers select a particular flight/airline. Many continue to view a la carte fees as airlines trying to nickel and dime them.

Arguments have been made that pushing travelers to airline websites can counter rising fares by lowering distribution costs or result in higher prices because of less competition. Regardless, travelers going directly to individual airline sites will have to work harder and visit multiple sites
