Slideshow: Passerby May Have Saved Woman’s Life
A smoke detector awakened a woman at a home in Peoria last night. When she didn’t see a fire, she shut off the smoke alarm and went back to bed. Hours later, a passerby pounded on her door, possibly saving her life.

Detect this: CO alarms now required
Unless you have a carbon monoxide detector on nearly every floor of your house, you’re breaking a new Wisconsin law which took effect Tuesday. The law passed in March 2010 covers one- and two-family residences, and is addition to the requirement of homes having smoke detectors.

A few nice Detector Life images I found:

RFID + IR Heat Detector and Arduino
Detector Life

I know everyone has done this before. RFID and arduino that is. But looking at the example code it looks like the antenna is always in receive mode. I am not sure how this affects the life of the chip / reader but I thought of adding a way to detect human presence before activating the receiver.

MetalDetectors.com

I found some little IR heat detector (here: www.allelectronics.com/make-a-store/item/IRD-10/INFRARED-… and tossed together some analog read code and viola. Now when the IR detector detects over a certain variable heat temp it activates the RFID reader.

I will post the code and write up on my blog.

I saw some of the poor reviews but I have 2 instruments with this sensor and the accuracy is great. No sensor will work right if exposed directly to precipitation so dont expect it.I had a homemade solar radiation shield go bad and exposed the sensor to direct rain and the only thing that happened is the humidity quit reading right.I had a professional weather station that happened to that cost 200 dollars and what happens is humidity wont read higher than about 36% no matter what the conditions are.Sure there isnt much to the sensor but it works great for the money. One more thing, when rain it my tx29udth-it,I bought another one from amazon and it worked great also,so I highly recommend it.

These work very well for me. The only drawback is the fact that they can’t be exposed directly to precipitation, so I had to build little shelters for them.

Bought several for outdoor lighting. Beware of the very wide base just above where the bulb is screwed into the light socket. My outdoor lights have shields that protect the bulb, and in this case the shield base width was not wide enough to allow this bulb to fit. Other notes 1) takes 2-4 minutes to reach full brightness 2) light color is nice & warm

I bought two of these to replace a pair of older model versions of the same type that gave out after about one year of use.

These worked great, nice white light, good coverage. I was happy, until the first one burnt out after about 10 days of use (about 6 hours a day). I thought maybe that one was just bad, until the second one burned out after another 4 days of use. After removing them, I found that the base of each was leaking a viscous ozone-smelling fluid. Another quality product made in China for GE.

I guess they might last 6 years if you never use them. I do NOT use a dimmer, so that isn’t an issue. I ended up just spending the extra money for LED floodlights and have stopped using CFLs for exterior lighting.

Hope you never need parts!, November 17, 2009

My wife and I received this trash can as a housewarming present for our new home. The little ring inside the can has gotten thrown away with the trash bag TWICE by visiting company, who don’t realize the ring is in there. Buying a replacement ring is an exercise in futility. A vendor gave me the phone number for Nine Stars, and they don’t answer their phone. You get directed to voice mail, and the voice mail boxes are ALL FULL, so the system will not accept any messages. Rings purchased from suppliers on the internet are ever-so-slightly too large, so they must have changed the design. I’m not going to buy a new auto-open lid just so it will fit the bag ring! The manual “lid open” button stopped working after six months. We love being able to wave at the can and it open, and when it was new, it was great! It lost two stars because of the difficulty in locating replacement parts.

Loved it when I got it. It worked great for about 5 months. Then is kind of worked when it wants to. Now, when it actually does open (and that’s only after I push the button – so much for touchless) it simply stays open (until I push the CLOSE button)!

This review is from: NST Nine Stars DZT-42-1 Infrared Touchless Automatic Motion Sensor Lid Open Trash Can, 11.1-Gallon (Kitchen)

I’ve owned my Nine Stars trash can for probably more than a year now and have no complaints. Granted, I do have space under my kitchen counter (that was intended for a trash compactor) so it stays pretty well protected from items falling onto it unintentionally so it’s still in perfect condition. But with two kids and a lazy husband, this was the best decision I made when we needed a new can. I don’t have to worry about touching the lid when I’m cooking with raw chicken or worry that my kids are going to get their fingers snapped like our old foot-pedal can did (which also seemed to send the lid flying up or down whenever I needed to throw something out).

Well, I guess to say that I have no complaints is not entirely accurate – both my mother and my mother-in-law were recently visiting our house and both asked for a Nine Stars trash can for the holidays. And guess who had to buy them?

This review is from: NEW VR3 USB LCD BLUETOOTH HANDS FREE CELL PHONE CAR KIT

Bought the product a few weeks ago and pretty happy with it. Of course, it can not be compared to the radio-embedded high-end systems and only provides basic functionality. A couple of caveats. 1) The product description says that it supports voice activated dialing. That only is true if your cell phone has that feature activated. 2) Have read in some reviews that the quality of the connection is mediocre and with strong echo. My hypothesis is that it very much depends on the quality of your car! If you drive one of those where you can not hear the radio because of the road noise, this system will probably not going to work for you. I personally found the quality to be exceptional on both ends.

This review is from: NEW VR3 USB LCD BLUETOOTH HANDS FREE CELL PHONE CAR KIT

I love the hands free car kit. It works like a charm. The problem most folks complain about is low volume. The solution is to turn up the volume on the cell phone that is connected to this device. It took me awhile to figure this out also. If the cell phone volume is low, the device volume will also be low even though you have turned up the device’s volume. With the connected cell phone turned up to full volume this baby is plenty loud and easily heard all over my 8 passenger Honda Odyssey! The manufacturer neglects to tell you this in the directions. Another hint–if you take you cell phone out of the car and into the store you must pair the phone again by pushing the bottom button on the hands free device once. You will hear a beep and it will find the phone.

This review is from: NEW VR3 USB LCD BLUETOOTH HANDS FREE CELL PHONE CAR KIT

The device has a good design (on paper), but the flip down number viewer is mostly impossible to read in the vehicle due to reflection, etc… Also, it will not recognize one cell phone, but it does another. Also, it is very difficult to hear it. I must have the windows closed, the A/C off, and place it as close to my head (on the visor) as possible to hear the person on the other end. Good try… with some improvement on the above, this would be a very good device to use.

That is pretty cool, but you have to admit that there is a lot of screws!
some are for nothing except asthetic. Even if screws are cheap, that still add money to the kit and you are the one counting, when you make the kits.
